Translation from Abkhazian
Approximately till the middle of the nineteenth century Abkhazian was used almost in the whole territory of modern Abkhazia, except south-east districts. Besides that, Abkhazian was also widespread in the North Caucasus. Thus, Abkhazian existed only in a conversational variant, as people who spoke it did not trust written language, considering it as related to magic and other irrational forces. After migration of the Abkhazians from their motherland to the territory of the Ottoman Empire, deserted territories were occupied by other peoples with their own languages. In the end, in 1989 the language began to be popular only in two districts of Abkhazian ASSR. However, during the Abkhazian-Georgian war, the language again became widespread throughout the country.
Now Abkhazian is the official language of Abkhazia. It is also used in Turkey, Syria, Jordan, Iraq and Russia. According to the data of 2011, about half of the population of the country, 122 thousand of habitants of Abkhazia, are ethnic Abkhazians.

The Abkhazian written language is based on Cyrillic graphic arts. The first attempt to turn that language to the Cyrillic alphabet belonged to the Russian linguist Peter Karlovich Uslar in 1862. The first-ever ABC-book came into the world in 1865. After a while, a renewed and a little corrected “Abkhazian alphabet”, which was compiled by L.I. Gulia and K.D. Machavariani, was published in 1892. That variant of the alphabet was based on the Georgian alphabet. In 1926, the Abkhazian written language was turned to the Latin graphic arts, in 12 years – to Georgian, and in 1954 – to Cyrillic basis.
