In the 20th century, Latinizing of all Turkic languages was made in the Soviet Union, including Azerbaijani. Then the Cyrillic alphabet (in 1939) was introduced and a reform of the alphabet was carried out in 1959 for its bigger suitability to the needs of the language. In 1991, an alphabet was again turned to the Roman alphabet.
Nowadays in the Republic of Azerbaijan territory the written language is used on the basis of the Roman alphabet, in Iranian Azerbaijan – on the basis of the Arabic alphabet, and in Dagestan – on the basis of the Cyrillic alphabet.
